# What is Ugadi?
**Ugadi** (also known as **Yugadi**) is the New Year’s Day for the people of the Deccan region of India, particularly in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. The word “Ugadi” is derived from the Sanskrit words “Yuga” (meaning era or age) and “Adi” (meaning beginning). It marks the beginning of a new astronomical cycle and is celebrated on the first day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of **Chaitra** (March–April).
Ugadi is a festival that symbolizes new beginnings, renewal, and prosperity. People celebrate it by cleaning their homes, wearing new clothes, preparing special dishes, and offering prayers to seek blessings for the coming year. A key tradition is the preparation of **Ugadi Pachadi**, a unique dish made with six flavors—sweet, sour, salty, bitter, tangy, and spicy—symbolizing the various experiences of life.
